Photoactive Antimicrobial Agents/Polyurethane Finished Leather

Received 14 May 2009; accepted 27 July 2009DOI 10.1002/app.31221Published online 15 September 2009 in Wiley InterScience (www.interscience.wiley.com).ABSTRACT: To prepare antimicrobial coating on leathersurfaces with high potency against microbes, photoactiveagents such as benzophenone (BP) and rose bengal (RB)were incorporated into polyurethane-based coatingsolutions, respectively, and then the BP or RB containingsolutions were applied onto surfaces of leather by a paintingmethod. The photoactive antimicrobial agents treatedleather samples were characterized by FTIR, SEM, andantimicrobial tests. The treated-leather samples demon-strated excellent antibacterial activity under fluorescentlight as well as UVA light and also the antimicrobial abilityshowed the effective durability to abrasion and daylight.
