Abstract : The research from 1984 to 1986 on Data Network Reliability had the objective of developing general principles governing the reliable and efficient control of data networks. The research was centered around three major areas: congestion control, multiaccess networks, and distributed asynchronous algorithms. The major topics within congestion control were the use of flow control algorithms. The major topics within congestion control were the use of flow control to reduce congestion and the use of routing to reduce congestion. The major topics within multiaccess networks were the communication properties of multiaccess channels, collision resolution, and packet radio networks. The major topics within asynchronous distributed algorithms were failure recovery, time vs. communication tradeoffs, and the general theory of distributed algorithms.
