Phasor measurement impact for regional reliability awareness

The North American SynchroPhasor Initiative (NASPI) is reaching an important point of convergence. There should be sufficient PMU coverage in 2008 in both the Eastern and Western interconnections to enable wide-area monitoring. A basic set of tools exists to process phasor data to provide useful information to operators and engineers. This paper outlines the primary infrastructure, policy, and human factors challenges that will need to be addressed to provide high-value tools in the immediate future.
