Pericarditis associated with infectious mononucleosis.

It is not surprising that the pericardium is involved in infectious mononucleosis, a disease of such protean manifestations. It is surprising that such a small number of cases of pericarditis associated with infectious mononucleosis have been reported. To date only 11 cases are in the literature. Pericarditis has been reported in association with other conditions, such as primary atypical pneumonia,1upper respiratory infections,2epidemic myositis,3lymphogranuloma venereum,4sinusitis,5and pharyngitis.6 It is the purpose of this report to present a case of pericarditis associated with infectious mononucleosis and to review the cases previously reported. Report of a Case A 22-year-old white man was admitted to the hospital on Oct. 21, 1956, with the chief complaint of severe crushing substernal pain of 10 hours' duration. He had been in good health previously, except for a mild nonproductive cough of 1 week's duration and a substernal
