Making First and Second Year Structural Design Assignments Like Real Consulting

Detailed analysis and design are put into a realistic context. Students are initially given an intentionally vague consultancy brief. Before starting detailed load estimation, structural analysis and member sizing, they must (i) request any further information they need, (ii) brainstorm possible solutions and (iii) identify preferred options. Finally they must document the results of their design so it can be built. Each of these stages is assessed so students get feedback before progressing to the next stage. Student response has been mostly positive but there is a need to make the delivery more flexible and less teacher-centred.
