Lodengraf damping : An advanced vibration damping technology

An advanced passive damping technology has been developed and shown to he effective in a broad range of application areas. The technology is based on the use of low-density granular materials for reducing structureborne vibrations. In many cases, reduced structural vibration leads to a reduction in airborne noise radiated from the structure, which is important in some applications. Granular materials like sand and lead shot have been used in the past for structural damping, but the weight penalty of these materials has prevented widespread use. Damping with low-density granular materials utilizes the effects of low sound speed in such materials without the penalty of heavy weight. Commercial application areas for this technology include structural damping in the automotive, aerospace, heavy equipment, and consumer products industries.
