A versatile congestion control framework for broadband ISDN

ATM networks will be required to carry the traffic with wide range of flow characteristics and performance requirements. These long-haul networks will operate at extremely high transmission and switching speeds and will thus be susceptible to congestion. Preventive congestion control schemes are suited to such networks. One such scheme, called framing strategy, has been suggested by Golestani. It provides loss-free bounded-delay communication. But the scheme is inflexible in terms of accommodating rich mixture of services. In this paper we suggest a highly robust and efficient modified framing strategy. It is a special ease of framing strategy and proves beneficial when a bundle of virtual circuits share a common path from source to destination (in the similar vein as virtual paths). It will provide significant bandwidth savings, permit rich variety of service classes and allocate resources better tailored to these classes.<<ETX>>
