Oxidation and intergranular disintegration of the aluminides NiAl and NbAl3, and phases from the system Nb‐Ni‐Al

The oxidation behaviour of the β-phase NiAl, of the line compound NbAl 3 and of the Laves-phase NbNiAl and other two- or three-phase alloys from the system Nb−Ni−Al was investigated using thermogravimetry and analytical techniques. Special features of the oxidation processes were elucidated with the aid of surface analytical methods, especially AES. As well the high temperature oxidation at >1000 o C was studied as the oxidation in the range of intermediate temperatures 700 to 1000 o C, where intergranular disintegration upon oxidation («pest») is observed for many intermetallic phases
