General prediction of median crystal sizes

Abstract Until now the main kinetic crystallization parameters, i.e., the rates of nucleation and growth, have been determined for a variety of systems. Only a few attempts have been made, however, to compare the results obtained for different systems with the aim of developing more general statements. This paper provides information about metastable zone widths and rates of nucleation and growth for systems in a wide range of solubilities. This information is intended to make possible a general prediction of median crystal sizes from the physical properties of the system as well as the type, geometry, and operating conditions of the crystallizer. At the moment this general goal cannot be reached. However, this paper provides information on this effort's progress and recommendations for how to proceed.
