Abstract A study is made of certain properties of a model cell network based on lateral inhibition. It is demonstrated that specific patterns of input activity, termed eigenpatterns, will pass through the network without distortion. Under certain conditions the network will show selectivity for one particular eigenpattern, and the degree of this selectivity is under the control of non-specific parameters of the network.
