Hybrid Broadcast-Unicast distribution of Mobile TV over 3G Networks

Several mobile operators have already launched MobileTV services in their network. Although traditionally delivered over broadcast those services are delivered over uni-cast today. With the introduction of MBMS during 2007/2008 cellular broadcast will become an alternative transport option. In this paper we present simulation results which show that from a radio resource perspective an optimal cellular TV distribution system should not allocate broadcast resources to all TV channels. Instead only channels with high viewing probability should be delivered over broadcast, all others should be offered "on-demand" over unicast
