Coherent Detection in Long-Haul Transmission Systems

We review the potentials and challenges of applying coherent detection in long-haul transmission systems. We compare several different coherent detection schemes from the aspects of receiver sensitivity, carrier phase recovery, and fiber nonlinearity induced penalty.
