Decision Device Optimization for Soft Decision Feedback Equalization

This paper considers the use of soft deci- sions to mitigate error propagation in a decision feedback equalizer (DFE). The decision device for the soft decision feedback equalizer is optimized by minimizing the mean- squared error (MSE) cost function defined at the input of the decision device. Furthermore, a bit error rate (BER) optimized soft decision device is derived for a BPSK mod- ulation scheme. Simulation results comparing the perfor- mance of the MSE/BER optimized soft DFE and the con- ventional DFE are presented.
