To replace the traditional geometric circuit unit,which has a fixed function and complex structures,a high performance programmable vertex processing unit(VPU) was proposed for mobile devices.The VPU has a fixed-point 4-way SIMD arithmetic unit and a pipeline structure with a data bypassing function and a high precision special functions unit.The efficient architecture increased the processing speed and reduced the circuit area.The VPU has been implemented on an FPGA platform.Experimental results show that the VPU is capable of accomplishing the geometric functions and allows users to customize the transforming models or lighting models to achieve various special effects.
