Hyper EN-Lite System for GMN-CL : Special issue on transmission systems

Hyper EN-Lite System, which realizes the functions of EN (Edge Node) and DF (Default Forwarder) in GMN-CL (Global Megamedia Network-Connectionless) architecture, has been developed to construct Core Network in the architecture cooperating with other components for Core Protocol operation. Points of networking technology in this Core Network are label switching by Core Header, redirection and short cut, distributed routing architecture, and QoS (Quality of Service) class based forwarding. This paper describes some key technical issues implemented in Hyper EN-Lite System to realize these points, and performance evaluation results of these components. Key technical issues to realize these components are: 1) high-speed Core PDU forwarding, 2) flow detection for short cut function, and 3) QoS class based frame scheduling, in these equipments. To handle high-speed Core PDU based frame forwarding and flow detection for short cut function, Intelligent Flow Search Engine based hardware packet flow switching mechanism is applied. Also, to realize QoS class based frame scheduling, SAR and ATMIC (ATM Interface Controller) handle QoS class frame queuing and forwarding with specific firmware architecture. These implementations have been done on ES100e/D4000 multi-layer switch with software customization applied to both Main Processor Card and ATM Interface Card. As a result, optimal throughput and QoS class based frame scheduling characteristics have been achieved.
