Development of Mobile Application for VRUs Using Computer Vision

Transportation has become a very important component for all ages in today's life. However, seniors often find difficulty in travelling through public transportation and even by their own vehicles. In such cases, augmented reality (AR) can be brought into picture for aiding elderly drivers and pedestrians. With the rapid growth of elderly mobile users, there is a possibility of using AR systems to aid elderly mobile users with mobility and independence. This research mainly concentrates on creating an application for elderly mobile users based on augmented reality that helps in virtual screening of directions using GPS and identifying the traffic signals and other sign boards. MATLAB/Simulink serves as an important software used to develop this application based on AR. Android studio is used to create the application based on augmented reality. Images or other types of data is captured by using sensors in Android devices, and the MATLAB image acquisition toolbox is used for processing the collected data. Once the MATLAB-based program is developed, it can be converted into Java codes if needed. Using Android Studio, the code will be used in the application. The development will include a voice navigation informing the direction in which the person should move, a traffic signal or a sign board.
