Frequency Selective Surface for reducing mutual coupling in antenna arrays

In this paper the effect of using one type of FSS called Split Ring Resonator (SRR) on reducing the mutual coupling between the antenna array elements has been investigated. The popular property of these types of resonators is that they have negative permeability near their magnetic resonant frequency which causes SRRs to show stop band behavior in their transmission (S21) curves [1–3]. In this study the effect of SRRs on the performance of two types of antenna arrays; Microstrip patch antenna array and monopole antenna array have been investigated. Placing the SRR arrays in between the antenna array's elements has caused a considerable reduction of 10 dB in the amount of mutual coupling between the elements of the microstrip patch antenna array and a considerable reduction of 20 db in the amount of mutual coupling between the monopole antenna array elements.
