Smart Design of Distribution Series Capacitor Bank Application for Improved Voltage Quality and Motor Start

The extensive radial distribution network to feed many consumers exposes to low voltage problem due to an increase in voltage drop. This paper introduces the series capacitor to improve the voltage quality to meet the requirement of the load. However, besides the advantages of the series capacitor, the sub-synchronous resonance problem should be considered when the motor start to operate. Therefore, this paper introduces a new design to overcome this dilemma instead of the conventional method (permanent damping resistor). Different methods have been used in and examined the resonance phenomenon during various load conditions to compare the results. Throughout the investigation mentioned above, simulation has been carried out with the help of Power System Analysis Software Package (PSASP) and MATLAB/SIMULINK.
