The Motor Vehicle - A Good Example of the Wide Range of Application of Modern Control Engineering

Abstract The paper briefly outlines current development activities concerning the use of active systems in automobile technology, particularly in the chassis/suspension field. Starting from the striking, pacesetting developments in engine control technology, similarly successful controls such as ABS and ASC systems, which influence vehicle dynamics are compared. Bearing in mind the necessary prerequisites for the successful utilization of modern control technology in the motor vehicle, the improvement potential and development trends in the field of chassis engineering are shown. The limitations of classic and the possibilities of modern control technology are demonstrated using the example of four-wheel steering and active suspension systems. The effects of these technologies will be perceptible over and above the individual automobile in future transport systems.
