The forward converter: extension to include synchronous rectifiers and current doublers

This tutorial paper introduces the basic principles of extending forward converters to include a synchronous rectifier and/or a current doubler. A key issue in ensuring a successful implementation of a synchronous rectifier is to properly address a so-called dead time problem. A current doubler can be viewed as a dual circuit to the familiar voltage doubler, but can be more insightfully derived from a full-wave rectifier. A performance summary is then presented for all of the eight topologies to guide practical designs.
