Studies in vitro on Free Amino Acid Pools and Protein Synthesis in Rat Jejunum

1. The uptake and incorporation in vitro of radioactive leucine in rat jejunum has been studied. — 2. The total free intracellular leucine pool makes only a minor contribution to tissue protein synthesis. — 3. Amino acid is incorporated into protein more readily from the mucosal than from the serosal side of gut sacs. — 4. The results of these experiments can be interpreted to show that in rat jejunum in vitro leucine is incorporated into protein without prior equilibration with the total free intracellular pool.
