Learning, particularly in technical disciplines such as dynamic systems simulation, requieres students to work out cases with diverse complexity, from illustrative examples to project assignments. The usage of accesible professional tools is a must, which in practice can be fulfilled only by open-source solutions. In this paper we report on our experience with JaamSim and OpenModelica. The maturity level of both tools allows to replace with advantage comercial options or their limited student versions, although JaamSim should keep on evolving, particularly in some usability issues, what requires the contribution of users. Some commercial tools enjoy a wealth of educational resources, something that might well be outperformed by sharing open educational resources, particularly worked out examples and cases, and this is why we contribute our course materials, which hopefully will be improved in future editions.
