An understanding o f how images a r e formed and what determines t h e amount o f l i g h t r e f l e c t e d from a p o i n t on an o b j e c t t o the viewer i s v i t a l t o such a development. The gradient-space, popularized by Huffman and Mackworth i s a h e l p f u l t o o l i n t h i s regard.
