The evolution of the synchronous machine

The beginnings of the synchronous machine are to be found in the closing decades of the last century. Since 1891, when the first long-distance transmission of high-voltage three-phase power was demonstrated at the International Exposition at Frankfurt, Germany, using a machine with an effective power output of 210 kW, the synchronous machine has undergone continuous development. Turbogenerators are now built with ratings of over 1700 MVA.
