Backfire antenna with a microstrip element

A new backfire antenna with circular polarization is proposed. A microstrip element is selected as the primary source of the antenna in order to make the antenna structure short. The shape of the microstrip element is a modified circular disk. To analyse the performance of the primary source, the concept of an equivalent elliptical patch is introduced. The characteristics of the new backfire antenna are analysed, based on the wire grid model and mirror theorem. The theoretical results agree fairly well with the experimental data.
