Design of patch antenna with switchable circular polarization using a branched feed circuit

A reconfigurable circularly polarized antenna is presented. The proposed antenna consists of a microstrip feed line, a ground plane with two slots, and a radiation patch. Bifurcating the microstrip feed line into two branches allows the polarization to be switched by opening and shorting the termination of the line using an anti-parallel diode pair. The design of the proposed feed structure for polarization-diversity operation is discussed, and switching between right- and left-handed circular polarization (CP) is demonstrated with cross-polarization discrimination of greater than 30 dB. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
