Vague regions in Geographic Information Retrieval

Vagueness abounds in natural language descriptions of geographical space. We frequently refer to place names for which no universally agreed boundaries exist (e.g. the Alps, Central London, Southern Europe) and describe spatial configurations using phrases that cannot indisputably be translated to hard constraints (e.g. within walking distance, north of, adjacent to).
