Restoration of Swampland: Planning Guidelines and Recommendations

There has been no documentation in Canada on the restoration of swampland from agricultural use. The majority of wetland restoration research has focused on restoring marshes previously converted to other uses. A few studies in the United States, however, have attempted the restoration of swamplands as part of larger restoration undertakings. After an extensive review of the literature on the subject, common planning procedures were identified. These were modified and adapted as planning guidelines for the restoration of reclaimed swampland in Southern Ontario. The costs associated with wetland restoration in Southern Ontario are difficult to determine at this point in time.
