Using Agent Based Distillations in Support of the Army Capability Development Process - A Case Study

Abstract : In order to support its continuous modernisation process, the Australian Army requires analytical Support in determining the effectiveness of their conceptual Enhanced Combat Force (set fifteen years ahead). Central to this is how new and emerging technologies might impact on how the land force operates, and, consequentially, how the Army's operational concepts might need to change. Agent Based Distillations (ABD) have been employed to analyse a problem based on Manoeuvre Operations in a Littoral Environment concept. Specifically, the hypothesis tested was whether a small, mobile force with high situational awareness coupled with effective reach-back munitions could defeat a significantly larger force. This paper illustrates the application of one such ABD, EINSTein, in support of the analysis of this hypothesis, and highlights the potential utility of ABDs for land operations analyses.
