GPR signal enhancement using band-pass and K-L filtering: a case study for the evaluation of grout in a shielded tunnel

The rapidness, non-destructiveness and high precision of ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology has enabled it to be widely and increasingly used in tunnel detection. However, data acquisition was usually restricted by physical and many other limitations. In order to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, band-pass and Karhunen–Loeve (K–L) filtering are recommended. An evaluation of Yingbin No. 3 Road Tunnel is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of GPR in the inspection of the thickness of the grouting layer behind the segment and the function of the two methods mentioned above. The advantages and limitations of these two processing methods are discussed in this paper and suggestions are provided.
