Effects of airflow on human comfort

Abstract The paper classifies effects of airflow on human comfort into two categories, those resulting from dynamic characteristics and those related to heat transfer. Dealing principally with urban wind problems, the sensations generally related to various windspeeds are noted, together with windspeeds that cause disarrangement of hair and clothing, raising of dust and difficulty of using umbrellas. Statistical criteria used in wind tunnel assessment of airflow around buildings are given together with acceptable accelerations in tall slender buildings subjected to buffeting by wind. The problems of wind generated noise are outlined along with common psychological problems. An expression is provided for estimating the chilling effect in cold climates. Conclusion emphasises the need for wind tunnel studies and consideration of building shape in the early design stage.
