Genetic engineering: Processes and products.

Most genetically engineered organisms have travelled no further than the walls or filters of containment laboratories and fermentors. The basic techniques used to produce these organisms are much the same as those used to engineer strains which are to be released into the environment. An examination of the fundamentals of genetic engineering as applied in the production of high-value pharmaceuticals illustrates the capability and limitations of current methods.
