Assessment and decision criteria for driving competence in the elderly

This study used specific critical road traffic scenarios identified as being most appropriate for highlighting age related problems in driving. The aim was to establish whether there are relative differences in the performance of younger and older drivers against the scenario specific assessment criteria and thresholds. An additional aim of the study was to gather preliminary data towards an investigation of aberrant driving behaviors reported by older drivers and age differences in glance behavior as a compensatory mechanism. The results of the study will be used to form the basis of further specifications in areas such as design of in-vehicle assistive technologies, and as an elderly driver re-training course.
