MODELLING STATION CONGESTION THE PEDROUTE WAY.

In railway stations and other major complexes (such as air terminals, buildings and sports centers), congestion associated with concentrated pedestrian movements is a common experience. As congestion increases, so do discomfort, frustration and concerns for safety. The aim of the planner must be to minimize congestion levels while ensuring that required safety standards are achieved. As an aid to station design, the PEDROUTE passenger simulation model has been developed. The program produces a detailed simulation of the movement of passengers around a station and provides statistics of their journey times and the delay and congestion they experience as they travel through the station. The program has been used extensively on a wide range of station projects covering new stations, improvements to existing stations and for safety audits.
