The guidance properties of multi-core photonic crystal fibres

The guiding properties of photonic crystal fibres (PCFs) which comprise more than one core are considered. An example three-core PCF is examined in detail. The cores in the example are in a perfectly symmetrical arrangement. The interaction between the modes in each core induces a splitting in the spectrum of β, the component of the wavevector along the fibre axis. The length scale of the beating that results is calculated as a function of wavelength. The numerical method employed is based upon the calculation of the multiple scattering between all the air holes that form the cladding of the PCF. The method is a powerful tool for the calculation of the properties of PCFs.
