Control of power management in the renewable energy system by using Flywheel Energy Storage

This paper presents a control technique of power management in the stand alone hybrid system by using Flywheel Energy Storage (FES). FES helps the system to regulate the load power, when the generated energy from renewable source has less than consumed energy. FES supplies the insufficient energy to the load power while the generated energy source has greater than the load power; the excess energy is stored in FES. This paper models the stand alone hybrid system between diesel generator, wind turbine generator and FES. The FES which composed of flywheel coupled to squirrel cage induction machine (SCIM) is controlled by machine side converter (MSC). The MSC model based on the rotor flux oriented vector control to regulate the DC bus voltage under constrain of energy charge or discharge stage of FES. The model which are simulated to show the FES can improve the dynamic performance of the hybrid system in many case such as wind energy fluctuation, slow response of diesel engine and load fluctuation by charge and discharge the energy from the flywheel according to the control objectives.
