Aerodynamic Test Simulation: Lessons from the Past and Future Prospects,

Abstract : A discussion of aerodynamic test facilities' developments, which was led by an AIAA panel of eleven experts from government, universities and industry (including U. S. and West-European representation), is recorded. The following topics were addressed: assessment of past experience (ad-hoc developments, deficiencies in technical judgment, inadequacy of information diffusion); present status and future prospects of aerodynamic and air breathing propulsion testing in all speed regimes; ground test - flight comparisons; free flight test technique; the politics of development of aerodynamic testing, from the early beginnings to the plans for the future. A review of the major West-European wind tunnels and a discussion of development of aerodynamic test facilities in the United States are included in two appendices. (Author)
