Regimes of shock-wave compaction of granular materials

Abstract Two deformation regimes, namely, quasi-static and dynamic ones, can occur in the process of shock wave deformation of granular powders. The dynamic regime is shown to be necessary for obtaining strong compacts. A criterion for determining the transition to the dynamic deformation regimes is proposed which was experimentally confirmed using granules of different initial microhardness. Using the thermal e.m.f. method, conditions for the onset of the dynamic regime of shock compaction were studied.
