Mapping of Sea Surface Temperature by the DMSP Satellite.

Abstract : Sea surface temperature (T2) may be inferred from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellite measurements of infrared radiances in atmospheric windows if errors in instrumentation, data processing, and satellite orientation are properly accounted for. Even in the absence of clouds, the slight opacity of the atmosphere in the windows causes the temperature 'seen' by the satellite to be lower than that measured by ships or aircraft. Clouds produce the same effect, but generally of a greater magnitude.
