Three dimensional reconstruction of the fire in a ship engine room with multilayer structures

The software of Fire Dynamics Simulator code (Version 5) is used to predict the developing processes of the fire within the engine room with multilayer structures. A 3D model is used for the fire field in a ship engine room. The model uses the Navier–Stokes equations, which are suitable for the low Mach number and the buoyancy driven flow. And a large eddy method with Smagorinsky subgrid-scale model is adopted to solve the model. The result shows that the combustion intensity, the formation of the ceiling jet and the transport velocity of the heat flow field might be enhanced by using a ship engine room with multilayer structures instead of a single cabin. In this case, the temperature distribution within the engine room is quite different, and the negative pressure is formed within it. These results are important for the engine room design, fire fighting and fire science research in the ship engine room.
