CORROSION ASSESSMENT OF A 34-YEAR-OLD PRECAST POST-TENSIONED CONCRETE GIRDER

A precast post-tensioned concrete girder was removed from a bridge in Fargo, North Dakota, and evaluated to determine the condition of the girder after 34 years of service. A program of nondestructive and material tests was performed with subsequent complete dissection of the girder to expose the post-tensioning elements. The girder was found to be in good overall condition with some surface corrosion noted during the dissection on localized areas of the post-tensioning wires, interior of the metal duct and the anchorage assemblies.
