I t would, of course, be quite impossible-both in terms of space and of the authors' capabilities-to survey all of the significant developments of the past several years in the general field of crystal imperfections. We have therefore chosen to limit our discussion to just a very few of these, frankly chosen from our own areas of interest and heavily slanted toward point defects. I f line and surface defects receive short shrift in the present chapter, this deficiency will surely be redressed in the volumes to come.
