Impactoftheuseoflarge framesizes infieldbuses formultimedia applications

Thelimitation inmaximumpacket size offieldbuses, is one ofthecharacteristics thatlimit throughput inthese networks. Thisrestricts therangeofmultimedia applications viable over these infrastructures. InEthernet, the limitation of1500bytes iscurrently being surpassed by theuse ofjumbo-frames, whichoffer a maximumframe size of9Kb,thussignificantly improving thethroughput ofEthernet. Theaimofthis paper istoanalyze theimpactofincreasing framesize intraditionalfield buses and inEthernet, as theyhavea different rangeofmultimedia applications. Astypical multimedia applications inindustrial environment, computervision applications are analyzed.
