Rechargeable and primary batteries are essential components of notebook computers. They supply the energy to power the computer as well as to protect and maintain its electronic memory when disconnected from the electric utility supply. The lithium-ion battery is the third system to power notebook computers. It has displaced nickel–metal hydride as the battery of choice. Its superior energy density gives the computer longer operating time between charges. Its light weight emphasizes portability. New cathode materials increase the energy density and the runtime of notebook computers. A battery protects the basic input/output system, essential for proper start-up of operation of the notebook computer.
