CAPS: improving power system stability using the time-overvoltage capability of large shunt capacitor banks

A new special stability control scheme, termed CAPS, improves power system stability by exploiting the time-overvoltage capability of large shunt capacitor banks. During low voltage emergencies, several series groups of wye-connected capacitor banks are shorted to increase reactive power output. Here, the authors describe successful commissioning tests on a 241.5 kV, 168 MVAr capacitor bank.
