THE “ACUTE ABDOMEN” IN VIET NAM

Those three of our patients with large and multiple perforations (all of whom died) had other inflamed oval areas in the ileum suggesting diseased Peyer's patches. On the other hand, four patients, (one of whom died) had only one tiny hole and no other ileal abnormality detectable at operation. Most were treated by closure of the perforations (in one case a segment of ileum was resected) and the intravenous administration of chloramphenicol in a dosage of 1 gramme every six hours.
