set goals and implement procedures tailored to the personal needs of that individual learner. In a personalized program, the student is at the center of her' own education both in her own view and in the view of her teachers. The system focuses the attention of everyone in it on one student at a time as a regular procedure. The educator and student develop a cumulatively deepening personal relationship through a variety of planned encounters with one another. This occurs in several stages. With the help of the educator, the student estimates where she is, how far she has to go, and makes choices about the goals she will pursue, the routes she will take to reach them and the distances she will have to go to reach them. The process starts with the prospective teacher wherever she is and helps her move toward her goals. These may be new, developing goals initially unanticipated by either the student or her teacher.
