Acquisition and Mobility of Expertise in Global Corporate Labour Markets

Multinational enterprises (MNEs) employ various combinations of international exchange to deploy their staff expertise to where it is needed. Such ‘portfolios of mobility’, combining permanent staff transfers, expatriate residential assignments, business travel and commuting, help to sustain corporate functions across a variety of production and market environments (Koser and Salt, 1997; Salt, 1997; Goshall and Bartlett, 1998; Forsgren, Holm and Johanson, 2005; Faulconbridge and Beaverstock, 2008; Jones, 2008a; Millar and Salt, 2008).
