This report treats the wave superheater, a unique device to produce a continuouss supersonic flow of uncontaminated air or other gases at temperatures and pressures needed for realistic hypersonic testing in the laboratory. The fundamental principles of wave superheater design and operation are developed. In particulars the gas dynamic and heat transfer aspects of one versions which is designed to generate 9000 R in uncontaminated air, are discussed. (auth)
