This book describes an information architecture designed to achieve intellectual control over large-scale, modular, integrated, fault-tolerant systems that leverage Semantic Web Services for automated analysis and design support during the engineering process. The technology independence of the information architecture reduces risk and saves money by preventing unknown project derailments.The Artificial Intelligence Design Framework (AIDF) developed for NASA provides facilities for 20 modules in the engine block with emphasis on modularity, scalability, reconfigurability, and service integration capability. Risk mitigation is achieved by a comprehensive synergistic validation and verification methodology for each major division of the integrated systems. The AIDF has broad impact and can be applied to any field that may benefit from an automated design/analysis process for improved decision-making. The architecture framework uses validated engine block modules for knowledge engineering and algorithm management, intelligent agents for logic control, and the Internet for invoking Semantic Web Services.
